My email stopped functioning after the new release of Thunderbird (V31.5.0) was pushed to my computer this weekend.
This weekend Thunbderbird V31.5 was installed and my email client will no longer connect to gmail. Nothing changed with my gmail account. Seems like something in the Thunderbird configuration has changed causing this issue.
Thunderbird Trouble Shooting info shows... ID Incoming server Outgoing servers account1 (pop3) pop.gmail.com:995 SSL/TLS Normal password smtp.gmail.com:465 SSL/TLS Normal password true
I'm tempted to uninstall and then reinstall but not sure how to save/backup/protect all my old emails and history.
Chosen solution
check your Firewall settings as it may be blocking Thunderbird.
Example: I use Norton Anti-Virus/Firewall. Sometimes, after an update, Norton still thinks it can allow only the previous version.
- I then have to close Thunderbird and access Norton.
- Settings > Network > Smart Firewall > Program Rules
- Locate Thunderbird and set to 'Allow'
- On one occassion, I have had to block, ok and then reset to Allow.
If you use another Firewall/Anti-virus program, then there will be similar settings. So check this first.

I have Norton 360 and found an entry in the firewall rules for Thunderbird that was set to 'AUTO'. I changed that to 'ALLOW' as suggested, rebooted and I'm a happy camper now. Toad-Hall, Thank you very much!
