When I click on a link, the new tabs works as it's supposed to. When I click on the plus sign at the top of Firefox, all tabs open blank. I don't get thumbnails of most frequent sites and I don't get Google. Either of those options would be great.

Type about:config<Enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type browser.newtab.url This tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened. If you want, right click and select Modify. You can change the setting to;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any web page or about: page you want.

The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as browser.startup.homepage.

Sounds that you have set the browser.newtab.url pref to about:blank on the about:config page.

You can set the browser.newtab.url pref to about:newtab if you want the new tab page with the thumbnails.

See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

I opened a blank tab and dragged the link for google to it. Google now showed in the tab. When I opened a new tab, it was blank.
