hi!

I think what you're looking for is information on Firefox Sync, which will connect all of your saved preferences, bookmarks, passwords, and history to as many devices as you like.

Find more information and how to set it up here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-set-up-firefox-sync

Hi jennierose,

Thanks for your quick reply. For firefox sync to work properly, firefox versions on all devices should be same, is that right?

Also if after synching bookmarks, If that device (in this case a pc) will be used by another person, do I need to manually remove bookmarks?

Thanks in advance

Caution: If you do that, the bookmarks you had on the first instance might desappear aswell as soon as it synchronizes.

Hi Ninguem,

I agree. Are there any other alternative way of exporting bookmark toolbar. I tried exporting it to html file but when I import, it gets imported to bookmark menu but not the toolbar

I didn't try this, but I think you could do it in several steps:

1. Open the bookmarks library.

2. Copy everything in the toolbar to a folder in the menus.

3. Export / import that.

4. Move (on the target) the contents of the folder on the menu to the toolbar.

Hi there,

I think I found a way. If I take a backup of bookmark library as .JSON file and restore it to another PC I am able to see all the bookmarks in right location

Let's try to sum this up.

  • For belts and braces safety, backup the Firefox profile before moving Firefox to a new pc. That will allow History, Bookmarks, Passwords, & other settings to be moved.
  • If the new PC has Firefox on already, and has other bookmarks on it already consider Sync or exporting .HTML bookmarks.
  • If you want all the Bookmarks overwritten use .json backups.

These methods do not work for just the toolbar bookmarks they are all the bookmarks. If it it is the places file it also includes History. Using Sync may include passwords, & open tabs etc as well, (but the old sync -- prior to Fx 29 -- was designed for use between devices that were active, not for instance between a previous defunct PC and a yet to be installed Firefox on a new device).

Firefox Profile
Ensuring the Profile is backed up may be a lifesaver for your bookmarks and other Firefox settings. The profile includes the bookmarks database complete with the History and any tags and keywords. The profile has other data including passwords and open tabs. The profiles should also contain snapshot backups of previous full sets of bookmarks.

Bookmark Backups The bookmarks are in a database long with History and any tags and keywords. The database file is places.sqlite Additionally the Profile has a bookmarks backup folder, that may and should contain additional snapshot backups. Be careful with those backups they should be full copies of bookmarks data from previous occasions but using them overwrites and destroys existing bookmarks.

.html Files of bookmarks may be created, exported & imported.
The files are relatively easy to view, and may be edited in many Word Processors. They tag-on (append to the existing bookmarks without destroying what you have. They may be cumbersome to use and do not contain the icons, tags and keywords.

Firefox Sync
Newly improved and should be great. Personally I advise caution and suggest at least keeping manual copies of the profile backups may be a wise precaution. Note

  • The older version was often little used or understood by endusers & suffered occasional problems in use. Some could be disastrous
    • duplicating and mangling bookmarks
    • user error wiping data
    • Not designed for backup to a server. Intended for use between and backup on multiple devices
  • The new version is only for Firefox29 onwards
