I am unable to flip the pages on on-line newspapers but have no problem doing this with Windows Explorer.

The Hong Kong Standard is an example at  :

Page 1 will show up but  flipping to other pages or zooming function will not work with Firebox.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
