Why are there advertising links (usually in green font and double underlined) found in the text of web pages viewed through firefox and not on internet explorer browsers

I notice that when reading text online from various web pages there are certain words which will be links. If I pass the mouse cursor over these they will pop up a small window with an advertisement. They are usually in green and double underlined. It appears these are available on web pages when I use the firefox browser but not the internet explorer. does firefox have an arrangement to allow advertisers to change or add text to advertising links arbitrarily for any website?

I am confident this will be nothing to do with any firefox arrangement. Either you are using better blocking settings/software on IE, or IE is unable to display the adverts, possibly due to how such links are handled. Is javascript enabled on firefox but not IE ?

after further inquiry it appears this has something to do with which plug-ins or add-ons are enabled on the browsers and not with a particular browser having an arrangement with advertisers. apparently it is the plug-in which has the arrangement as a way of generating funds in order to provide the service the particular plug-in provides.

Such links are IntelliTXT type links that are added via a script that runs on the page. If you do not see them on IE then the script may only work in Firefox.

You can look at Adblock Plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1865
You need to subscribe to a Filter list (e.g. the EasyList): http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

This was irritating me to no end. Thank you for your post. My 'problem' was a PlayBrite extension or something like that. I removed the extension, restarted firefox and voila, no more double underlined text links to advertising. Thanks all.
