Save or Download Pop Up Box

more options

Hello

I need to download files from my email and text messaging application. I no longer get a pop up box asking if I want to save or open the file. It just send it to downloads. Then I have to go there and open the files. This is not convenience or efficient. How can I get the pop up box back?

I sometimes have clients take pictures of their documents and text me. For example to day someone sent me individual pictures of a 10 page document. I had to download and save each of those files. Then open them into the picture program then print them so I could put them all in one .pdf. Whereas before, the box would pop up. I would then chose to open file with the corresponding program. It would open the program then I could print the document.

I am desperate to get the box back. Thanks!

As you noticed, Firefox 98 changed the standard behavior from "ask what to do" (before) to "save file" (now). After the file is saved, it is added to the Downloads list and by default, the Downloads list drops open for one-click access. However, that workflow might not be for everyone.

In many cases, there is a fairly quick fix, so let's check for that possibility:

(1) You can try changing the behavior for the specific file type on the Applications list on the Settings page. This article has the steps:

Manage file types and download actions in Firefox

(2) If the file type you want to manage is not listed there, try this first: open the Downloads list, right-click the file, and choose Always Open Similar Files.

Firefox then should add that file type to the Applications list with a "Use [default application]" action. You can use the steps in the previously mentioned article to change it to an Always Ask action if you prefer that.

(3) If that menu item is missing for these downloads, the site might be misidentifying the file as generic binary content instead of identifying it as a specific type. This is harder to work around.
