I am running MAC Version Catalina 10.15.7, on Firefox version 90.0, and after installing the update today, every single "like" icon on the Facebook no longer appears. the placeholder is still there, as you hover over the area, you can still click on the area, but the icons no longer appear. This happened in 89.0.2, but only some of the images for the like icons would disappear, not every single one of them.

I have not heard of this being associated with a recent change, so I'll make some general suggestions.

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe/Troubleshoot Mode

In this mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

I did all of this stuff before I posted to the Community. A similar problem is also happening on Chrome, but not ALL of the icons are gone, which is how Firefox was working before I installed Version 90.00 this morning.

I really don't want to use Safari. I cleared all CACHES on the entire MAC, cleared all cookies, and restarted the computer. I also walked through all the TROUBLESHOOTING steps under HELP all before I posted this problem.

Chrome and Safari act the same way, some of the icons appear, and some do not. But Firefox, none of the icons appear since applying vesrion 90.00

I don't understand why any icons would be missing from either browser.

I assume you are allowing sites to select their own fonts and not forcing them to use just the short list on the Preferences/Settings page (which can lead to missing iconic font characters).

Is there possibly a shared upstream filter like security software, family filter, or a proxy server that both browsers share?

I have never touched the fonts, it is set to Default under preferences and the Allow sites to choose their own font has always been checked, as the attached image shows,

I use a Sonicwall at our location. But the IOS, Android and Windows devices are NOT having any issues with any browser and icons appearing, just the MAC and I have 3 of them, one on EL Capitan (old firefox no issue), Big Sur, new version of Firefox 90.00 having the same problem as the Catalina version.

I see a blank area in your screenshot. I guess the animated "reactions" are what will not load or will not display?

I logged in to Facebook (on Windows) and took a look that that little popup panel. Unfortunately, the images are rendered to individual HTML canvas elements, so it's difficult to be certain what image file is being used. I've attached a screenshot showing that dead end.

When I trigger re-retrieval of the images, the page pulls a number of keyframe files, which is a format FB invented for Reactions. Those files have URLs like this (but the bold part changes from one file to the next):

https://scontent-lax3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/m1/v/t6/An_KOWvmE8xXhWbKcEDamiAQ14ZKS7T_w5aOTf-M8Krv4ls-f63eecRjpMEIRfwoMQw0XjeM4Q2PKoqtUSQc0_q66s2ahAGa0OTb.kf?ccb=9-4&oh=b6786bba77d8eab36816980109c4ffe3&oe=60F1E680

(That's not a useful format for viewing, as you'll see if you retrieve it.)

It seems that either the keyframe files aren't getting retrieved for some reason (possible block on some servers under the fbcdn.net domain?) or there's a problem with HTML canvas elements.

I do have GEO controls setup on my SOnicwall, so there are certain countries that we cannot access upload or download. If for some reason, FB has these files there, then I would think that on all of my devices that are connected to my network here, this would be a problem. I have 2 Android phones, 2 IPADs, 3 MACS (El Capitan, Catalina, and Big Sur), and 1 Windows PC. Only the 2 newer MACS are having the issue.

I only have Chrome loaded on the IOS, and Android devices. But have Firefox and Chrome loaded on all the other work stations.

This started several versions ago, that some of the icons were there, but others gone, even though when you scroll over the positions, it tells you that it is Like, Love, Care, HAHA, WOW, Sad and Angry, just the picture does not display.

First time I noticed it on Chrome on the Catalina and Big Sur. Chrome on El Capitan is fine, as is Firefox.

Thus helps me to understand, but does not help me with a solution. I have to deal with Social media for my Job as far as posting for my company. It apparently is not a FB problem, as it works on Windows, Android, and IOS. So this may be a MAC issue, which if that is the case, I will just report it to Apple support, as I discovered another Bug on Catalina and Big Sur with processing Text documents that have ASCII 12 Form-feed characters. Textedit on MAC ignores them, as well as the Printer Dialogue - Save as PDF. It strips them completely, and decides to set the form to however it wants. Their app PAGES is working fine as do all other Word processing packages such as Open Office, Libre Office and MS Word. Did not mean to digress.

So If I need to bring this up with Apple support, I can, but they are going to point to the website, as Safari, Chrome and Firefox all seem to be doing the same thing, just Firefox is worse.

What font is this about ? Is this about an emoji font ?

You may need an update for this specific font to have the latest additions.

In this case, it's not a font but an animated smiley. https://engineering.fb.com/2016/11/22/android/keyframes-delivering-scalable-high-quality-animations-to-mobile-clients/

Thanks Jefferson (I notice that the images used on that fb.com page are normal animated GIF images).

Issues with canvas not working properly can be caused by using "Resist Fingerprinting".

I don't know whether "@media (prefers-reduced-motion)" rules are used here that could also be affected by ui.prefersReducedMotion of by an OS setting to reduce motion.

  • System Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display -> Reduce Motion

Thank you for your suggestions. I tried both of the settings you discussed, separately, and together, and not much difference. Today, about 2 of the icons appear on a regular basis, and not always the same ones. My Android devices are Having no problems, and they are connected to the same LAN here through the Wifi. The Windows machine is also not having any issues with Explorer, Firefox or Chrome. I will bring this up with Apple Support because apparently something is going on here, and if Mozilla support has no idea when this only started a few versions back, I want to say Version 87, they have been coming fairly fast these days, so not sure.

I also went to FB help, and they don't offer much suggestions other than clear the CACHE and log out, restart your computer and try again.

If I get a response from Apple or FB, I will share.

You can check the Web Console (Tools -> Web Developer) for related messages.

You can check the Network Monitor to see if content is blocked or otherwise fails to load.

If necessary use "Ctrl+F5" or "Ctrl+Shift+R" (Mac: Command+Shift+R) to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.
