I have a lot of bookmarks and at times need to re- arrange them.

So I export the bookmarks and then edit them - rearrange them in Word, however after editing them and saving it as html file and importing back into firefox all the folders are gone the links are there but the folders the links were in are gone. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Basically the bookmarks are separated into sections- folders labeled and inside the folders are the links upon importing to firefox all the folders are gone.

These instructions are for Firefox. Other browsers should also be able to do this.

These instructions will combine the new bookmarks with the old.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer/profile. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

Hi gowent, coincidentally, I just replied to your thread on /r/Firefox.

Word is not a good choice for this job. What Word saves/exports as HTML is unlikely to be viewed as a valid bookmarks.html file, so instead, Firefox will just pull out the links. And Word also makes a poor text editor when you need help spotting important features of the code.

I don't know whether there are any WYSIWYG editors that will preserve the weird structure of a bookmarks.html file. There certainly are text editors that could help you out more than Word if you need to work at the level of the HTML code. For example, Notepad++ has syntax coloring.

But depending on your needs, it may be simplest to use the Library window. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • "Show All Bookmarks"

You can open a folder using the folder tree in the left column, multi-select bookmarks on the right and cut/paste from one folder to another. Drag-and-drop may work as well.

There are some idiosyncrasies, for example, I think sometimes Firefox will copy instead of moving, so you need to go back and delete the original. However, it's much safer than using Word.

Thanks for the reply, older versions of firefox worked well with word. I know because I did it in the past and it worked perfectly. I have sooo many bookmarks around 800 and around 100 topics that is why I am trying to break them down/sort them through the lists and easier on the eyes. Now I am trying to do this even easier (kinda) I am basically making separate user profiles on windows and naming those profile as topics from bookmarks and then trying to add all the bookmarks for those topics to that profile. (if that makes sense)

I guess I will just keep copying-recopying the whole firefox bookmark html to each profile and then manually delete everything except the topics pertaining to. Thanks for the reply-help!
