You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

I have about 13,000 bookmarks. I'm wondering if with Firefox 36.0 and 36.0.1 bookmarks are handled differently internally in the browser to where if a person just has a modest number of bookmarks no difference in bookmarking speed or in speed of accessing bookmarks is evident, but if a person has a very large number a big difference in bookmarking speed is noticeable.

I tried updating to Firefox 37.0b3, but that didn't help. I uninstalled and went back to 35.0.1 which works just fine. Speedy bookmarking of web pages and speedy access to bookmarks manager.

I ran the Places Maintenance add-on set to "All" with no improvement. I also rebuilt the Places database per the instructions on this page http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_button... and that did not help.

Did you check this in a clean profile without any extensions installed with only the bookmarks restored?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

I created a new profile with only the bookmarks restored. That did not help. What I did to solve my problem was to archive my bookmarks and then create a new profile with all my customizations, but not the bookmarks. At least this way if I need to I can access my old bookmarks in a profile created only for that purpose.

I did try it again and still no success. I think my bookmarks file is too corrupted to be salvageable.

It still seems odd to me that Firefox 35.0.1 could handle my 13,000 bookmarks easily, but Firefox 36.0 and 36.0.1 can't. There probably is some corruption in my large, old bookmarks file, but the sudden change in Firefox's performance makes me think that it was a change in the way the browser handles bookmarks that caused the problem.

Also, I have to wonder if once I accumulate a large number of bookmarks will the newer versions of Firefox not be able to handle that either? Was bookmarking handling-ability sacrificed to achieve some other performance objective with Firefox? For me, bookmarking handling-ability is one of the main reasons I use Firefox.
