I have the latest version of Tbird which worked fine. Then a few days ago I installed AVG Tuneup softward. After I ran it, Tbird would no longer open links in emails. I uninstalled AVG and reverted the system to a restore point before the installation, but Tbird still wouldn't open links. I followed instructions in the article on incorrect preferences (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Hyperlinks-in-Messages-Not-Working#w_check-for-an-incorrect-preference) and now Tbird will open plain links but not those in buttons. Worse, if I click on a button the cursor goes wild. The hourglass appears and blinks rapidly, and the cursor won't work. I have to close everything and restart.

AVG says they can't help me. I hope someone here can! Thank you.

download and reinstall both Firefox and Thunderbird, do not uninstall, simply allow the installers to run and hopefully fix the damage done by AVG

I think the real fix will come from the firefox reinstall, but do both as it only takes a couple of minutes.

Thank you, I did both reinstalls, but unfortunately they didn't work and after trying to click a button link my cursor still blinks and won't work.

Do I need to uninstall completely and then do a completely new installation? What would happen to all my email folders?

I think some more diagnostic attempts would be more useful that uninstalling. It very very rarely fixes anything with Mozilla software.

To that end, try the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

I tried both your suggestions, and the problem still occurred in safe mode in both cases. Then I did a complete virus scan of my system and it came up clean. Ironically I have AVG Internet Security which has always been excellent (which is why I was willing to try the tuneup software) and is updated every day.

There is something called Standard Diagnostic in Mozillazine (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Thunderbird). Would that be of any use?

Thanks again.

I think we are well into the standard diagnostics, but please try everything in the article.
