if I x-out the screen disappears but firefox is still running. if i ask to reload message says already on. and task manager says it is on....... but no screen.

if i don't check task manager then firefox could be left on accidentally for hours

This may have started after last update.

Try to update to Firefox 29.0.1 via Help > About

  • Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden Menu bar.

There is also a Help (?) button in the drop-down list of the 3-bar Firefox menu on the Navigation Toolbar.
