Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I ran Malware and Hitman in safe mode and did not find anything. However, when I use the links to open firefox in safe mode everything pops up faster and the process does not remain running after closing firefox. Any other thoughts?

When I have multiple tabs open in firefox there is multiple processes running. When I was in safe mode there was only one firefox process running, even when I had multiple pages or tabs open.

It may have been worth running all the malware related scans not just two of them.

We do not have your troubleshooting information, but as you say the problem goes away in Firefox's safe mode and as safe mode disables your Firefox extensions try Firefox running with all extensions disabled. Does that help ? If so try re-enabling one at a time to find the problem extension.
