You say "new" emails…

Thunderbird's default behaviour is to show today's messages with just the time, and all other messages with both date and time. Is this what you see?

It can be changed, as described here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Date_display_format

I found the truncated time-only format is actually helpful (once you understand what's going on) as it makes identification of recent messages very easy when using any sorting or presentation that doesn't preserve date /time order.

Many thanks - I have found what I need to do but will try leaving the emails as they are for time being as you suggest and see how I get on

Cheers Tim
