Ever since Firefox version 11 the release update channel has not automatically updated Firefox. Starting with version 14, it always reports that "Firefox is up to date" even though there is an update available.

You appear to be using Firefox 15 which is relativley up-to-date. Mozilla Firefox will have 15.0.1 on the release channel.

A you are presuably using a build for a specific Linux distro perhps you would get a better answer by asking on your Linux support forum.

Thank you.

I am using the compiled version I download from Mozilla. Redhat/CentOS 5.8 distributes version 10.0.7. That may include back ported code from later versions for specific bugfixes.

Firefox version 10.0.7 is the Firefox ESR version that may have been branded.

If you can't update then download and install the full Firefox 15.0.1 version.

You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

I have been downloading and installing from the tarballs since version 11. I was just wondering if there was some setting I needed to change to make the release update channel work. At least the notification part.

Thank you all for your help.

Did you click the "Check for updates" button in the Help > About Firefox window?

You need to have write permissions for the Firefox program directory to make updating work or you see a message that there are updates available.

You can also check the app.update prefs on the about:config page and make sure that they have the default values or try to reset all prefs by deleting prefs.js and a possible user.js or check the content of the user.js file in case you want to keep some settings.
