Firefox 9.01 hangs every time when connecting to the first web page

Firefox has worked normally for ages and then today began hanging whenever I open it and it attempts to connect to a web page. I tried reinstalling but was told it couldn't copy over because the item "libnspr4.dylib" is in use (even though I force-quit the application). I then moved Firefox to the trash in order to reinstall it, and still suffered the same problem. Restarted computer and application multiple times; tried running in safe mode, all to no avail.

Edited to add: The problem occurs with any webpage; before I reinstalled it would happen when "Connecting..." to any web page I tried. Now that I've reinstalled, it attempts to connect to the Firefox home page on launch and automatically hangs.

Chosen solution

Alright, since OP isn't replying, I would love to try to find a solution to this issue. I am not using Cisco AnyConnect. I am having the exact same problem, with the same system details that OP provided.

OP here. No, I wasn't using Cisco AnyConnect or any sort of VPN, firewall, etc. The hanging behaviour was very sudden.

I was finally able to solve it by making a backup of my profile (located in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles), launching the Profile Manager (see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles), deleting my existing profile (WITHOUT the option to delete the actual files, as it hung the same way when I tried that), creating a new profile, manually deleting the old profile (in the Profiles folder, not the backup I just made), and then recovering the parts of my profile I cared about from the backup (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile).

(I checked to make sure Firefox would connect after recovering each item, and none of them caused the problem to recur.)

Seems like a lot of people have this problem; it would be helpful if Mozilla at the very least posted some kind of FAQ regarding it.

Dan.
