This just happened to me, navigation buttons became greyed out and Firefox didn't go to the default homepage I had set. Never thought a lack of back button could be SO irritating! Anyway, I had randomly happened to notice that the Yahoo toolbar that I'd inadvertently downloaded had acquired a new add on called TACO something or other that claimed to protect your personal details when you were online but which somehow just looked dodgy to me. I simply went to Firefox Tools>Add Ons and uninstalled the Yahoo Toolbar and anything else that seemed surplus to requirements. It then gives you the option to restart Firefox..and thankfully everything seems to be back to normal at the moment. BTW, sadly I always seem to have had problems with Firefox 3.6 and reluctantly I have downloaded Google Chrome for my laptop - even though I really don't like its layout - as Firefox was taking AGES to launch and was just driving me mad.

It's Adblock. If you disable Adblock by going to tools/add-ons and disable it, then the back button works.

Or it may not be Adblock for you, but try and disable and enable various add-ons until you find the culprit.

Actually, my mistake. It's actually the McAfee Site Advisor Add-On that was causing it for me.

My Addon was ColorZilla 2.5.5. Which really sucks as it's a great add-on and I use it all the time. Just submitted email to their site looking for update. My problem wasn't on initial load of Mozilla, but when running multiple windows (I develop websites so have multiple windows of mozilla open across multiple monitors.

Hope that helps and hope they update Color Zilla soon.
