Firefox opens a tab loads part of it then closes the tab

Sometimes, I try to click on a link from a page to open in another tab. Firefox opens a new tab, loads part of the page then closes the tab again. If I click on the link a second time, it will sucessfully load the new tab as normal.

This can happen even with a link from Email to Reddit or some such and firefox will start up, partially load the tab and close down again. It's really frustrating.

I've been putting up with it for about 3 months on Win7 thinking it might be my system was overloaded with junk. But I recently upgraded my PC completely, (CPU, Memory, Motherboard and Graphics) and installed Win10 on it and a fresh install of Firefox. It's still happening. It's nothing to do with hardware acceleration or such, this is a totally new PC and a fresh install of Win10 and Firefox with no tweaks.

It's driving me nuts because I want the page to open but I sometimes have to click on the link twice to open it. It's like Firefox is treating the new tab as a popup and closing it.

Is this with all websites/pages, some, a few?

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I could load 20 or 30 pages before it happens again, it's intermittent, but it's really annoying when it does happen.

It doesn't seem to happen in troubleshooting mode, but that might just be that it hasn't found a page that triggers it. I went out of troubleshooting mode and opened a couple of pages from my bookmarks toolbar in a new tab and it happened again. I went through them all again 3 times "open in new tab" and nothing happened, it just seems completely random.

These bookmarks are pages I have opened and closed many times before so it's not a problem with malware on the page, I also have Avast AV that prevents pages with malware being viewed and I also added Spybot on today to prevent my home page being changed to Google or Bing, another annoyance I've found since I changed to Win10.

Hi Tryst, if Firefox blocks a popup, it doesn't open in the first place. Do you have any add-ons that include their own popup blocking feature that might be having a delayed reaction?

Only adblocker. But it would block the page every time if that was doing it. It only blocks the ads on the page, not the page itself, I have seen a completely blank page because the page WAS the ad that got blocked but the tab didn't close.

Does it only do this on some pages? Please post their links here.

Got a reply from another thread here. It did it on the link from the email notification I got: https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md Clicked it again and it worked the second time.
