Is there a way to eliminate passwords totally, or a default password that will work for both sending an receiving?

No. You'd invite the whole world to access (and abuse) your account. Good luck with that. Though you can tell Thunderbird to remember your account password, so that you won't have to type it again and again every time it's needed.

There is an account password you set when setting up the account with your email provider. This password is used for both, sending, and receiving email.
