I have a Windows based 30.0 on a desktop. I want to "clean" my cache, but save my browsing history to a separate file so it is available to me in the future for reference. I am not sure where this info is stored and there doesn't seem to be a menu item to save it like you can with bookmarks.

Glad we helped, thanks for posting back.

I marked cor-el's answer as the solution.

May be worth remembering that the nirsoft utility gives you access to a listing of History, but it is no going to create or recreate the Firefox History as for instance used in displaying results in the address bar

cache is basically a store house of things Firefox keeps about web sites, clips and other things. You should set the browser to clean it out. History, bookmarks, passwords and other data are kept in their own folders.

The history and the bookmarks are stored in the places.sqlite file.

I will expand on Fred's answer

Clearing cache, or parts of it is sometimes necessary, it can however be somewhat counter productive because clearing it may slow down Firefox, and increase slightly the bandwidth required.

If you are considering using third party cleaning tools on Firefox take care, they are probably unnecessary and may have unexpected effects

If you wish to preserve the history save your Firefox profile , or specifically the database file places.sqlite However that is a database combining bookmarks and History and using an old version restores the old state of bookmarks and overwrites the current ones. (A workaround would be to export current bookmarks as HTML in order to update an older places.sqlite by importing them)

Note open tabs are saved in a completely different set of files sessionstore.js
