Messages not in the third side

Till about a week ago in the inbox panel I saw the messages info in the second side and the messages themselves in the third side and as i went down the list the next clinked message appeared.. Now i just have the message information and have to double click to see the messages which then appear in a new window . i do not know how this changed and cannot figure out how to get it back About Thunderbird says release 24.6.0, if this change is about the new Thunderbird, then how to get back to an earlier version that works for me?
