full screen flash fails on YouTube and video.google.com ONLY when FF is running in full screen mode
issue: embedded flash video gives unexpected results about 95% of the time ONLY when switching to full screen video ONLY when firefox is already running full screen mode, and about 45% of the time in google chrome, also ONLY when chrome is running in full screen mode (F11).
expected result: while browser is in full screen mode, embedded flash video can switch to and play in full screen.
instead: video *blinks* once in full screen (the current image in the video can be seen for a split second in full screen) then returns to embedded view on webpage.
- note: as far as i can tell this happens ONLY on YouTube OR when accessing any videos from video.google.com. other embedded flash video sites give expected results when switching to full screen video while firefox is in full screen mode, UNLESS accessed through video.google.com (e.g. a video from dailymotion.com accessed through video.google.com). i tried several videos on several popular sites (vimeo, dailymotion, metacafe, imdb, myspace) and all video on these sites performed as expected in full screen.
- sometimes the video continues to play, and each attempt to switch to full screen video results in the same full screen *blink*. after several attempts at switching to full screen (often 3 seems to be the magic number) all the features of the embedded flash content are disabled (play, pause, loading, volume, any response to context menu selections when right-clicking the embedded flash window) until the page is reloaded.
- sometimes the full screen *blink* will *stick* in full screen, but the video stops and all the controls are disabled. pressing ESC key to get out of full screen video mode always functions properly.
- sometimes (unfortunately, for debugging purposes) the video will switch to full screen video mode and play normally. this happens about 5% of the time, and ONLY when the video is allowed to cache about 25% of its content first.
system:
- win XP SP3 32-bit
- NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT 1GB with drivers 285.58 (up-to-date)
- firefox 7.1 (now 9.0.1)
- flash version: 11.1.102.55
things i've tried:
- uncheck (disable) "enable hardware acceleration"
- starting firefox in safe mode/with no plug-ins or add-ons
- emptying cache and deleting cookies
- uninstalling current flash and re-installing
- uninstalling and downgrading flash to 10.1.82.76
- turning off the option in YouTube Playback Setup "Always play HD when switching to full screen (when available)"
consistencies:
- works as expected in Internet Explorer when the browser is in either windowed or full screen mode.
- works in Chrome when the browser is in windowed mode, and with more frequent success than firefox when Chrome is in full screen mode (after between 3 to 5 clicks of the "full screen" button, resulting in *blinks*, the video will play in full screen, or the audio will continue to play while the video freezes).
- works as expected in firefox (both listed versions) when the browser in windowed mode.
- above consistencies true for both versions of flash tried.

Try to disable the hardware acceleration in the Flash Player.
See:
- http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html (right-click the player: Settings)
Flash "Display settings" window:
That's the first item listed under "things I've tried." Thanks though :)
