What data did the Clean Disk app remove? Didn't it keep a backup?

You need a backup copy of logins.json or logins-backup.json and possibly also of key4.db in case that file got removed as well to recover the usernames and passwords.

You can look at a utility to browse System Restore points to see if you can locate these files.

Firefox keeps a backup of your passwords in a file called "logins-backup.json" in your profile folder.

You could try restoring that by renaming it to "logins.json" while Firefox isn't running, after first renaming / moving the original "logins.json".

You should probably make a backup copy of all renamed / replaced files first.

Note that logins-backup.json only allows to undo the last changes made to logins. You can open this file if you have it in a Firefox tab to see if it contains logins.

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

you say " you could try", but that doesn't sound too convincing, isn't there an official way to do it?

is there a third party app or add on that restores this data [for next time it happens]

thanks though

you say "logins-backup.json only allows to undo the last changes made to logins." that sounds like its not going to help me as i only want to restore old data....i don't get it at all

i have seen my profile now [lots of folder etc, i presume thats it] , but theres no obvious way to restore it, so maybe a screen shot of the passwords is the best way to get them if im not allowed to copy/paste them which will probably be the case

bill, I do not know of any 3rd-party tool to restore the logins backup, nor of any inbuilt mechanism.

Unlike with bookmarks, where you can restore from a backup using the Firefox library, I think restoring from the passwords backup is a manual process.

As long as you make copies of all concerned files before renaming them / moving them, you can always restore the originals if this doesn't fix the problem. Just remember that Firefox needs to not be running while changing profile files.

I would recommend that you try this sooner rather than later, as the longer you leave it, the more the likelihood that any missing passwords that still exist in the backup file will be overwritten by any new changes.
