Critical: Missing Bookmarks with 95.0 update

Firefox updated automatically to v.95.0 (64-bit), Windows 10, on December 8, 2021 at 1:09 PM.

Since the update, all my Bookmarks are missing. All attempts to restore them have failed (using the Menu->Bookmarks->Manage Bookmarks->Import and Backup->Restore option). My toolbar settings are: Bookmarks Toolbar->Always Show and Show Other Bookmarks.

This is a critical loss for both business and healthcare purposes. I would appreciate an immediate and viable solution.

I appreciate your additional input.

I tried Ctrl+B, and optional Show Sidebars and Bookmarks Menu buttons from the Customize Toolbar feature after first encountering the missing Bookmarks with the 95.0 update. None of them worked.

However, if I first copy and paste the Bookmarks Menu and Other Bookmarks folders from the Manage Bookmarks library into the Bookmarks toolbar at the top of the window, all three options mentioned above work again. That's a solution I can work with.

I'm sorry to hear about this problem.

When you looked at the Restore menu, did it list numerous backups with lots of items? Not just the default 19-24 items in one backup?

Assuming so:

First, if you haven't already, please do a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has bookmark problems, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

Thank you for the prompt response.

  • The Restore menu listed 15 backups since June 7, 2021, each with more than 450 items.
  • Since the Firefox update at 1:09 PM today, I have done a normal shutdown and/or restart of the system more than a dozen times; however, the Bookmark issue remains.
  • The Verify Integrity report under the Troubleshooting Information page starts with the same content as noted in your post.

FYI...The only thing I have been able to do is copy and paste the Bookmarks Menu folder and a couple of sub-folders from the Manage Bookmarks library into the Bookmarks toolbar at the top of the Firefox window. However, there is not enough space in this toolbar for my needs, and the number of clicks and time required to find folders and files are simply unacceptable.

What happened to the option that allowed you to pin the bookmarks menu to the right or left of the Firefox window?

You can open the Bookmarks Sidebar using Ctrl+B. There also is an optional Sidebars button for the toolbar which you can add or move using the Customize feature. See:
