My firefox kept giving me an error saying something about profiles and not being able to run. I found a help page on mozilla that said to delete the profile.ini and in doing so I have lost every bookmark I had. There was nothing in the bookmark back up folders that were hinted at online, and then when I tried to import a file called places.sqlite that firefox said would have my bookmarks in from my old profile, this didn't work either. Can anyone help? I've lost years of bookmarks.

Do you only have one profile in the location where the profile folders are located?

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder and go one level up.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

You can also check if there is an "Old Firefox Data" on the desktop.

Hi, for some reason there are several profiles. I tried doing the whole pasting important parts into each profile to see if it fixed the issue, but it didn't. I pasted the places.sqlite into each profile, thinking it would restore all my bookmarks, but nothing happened.

Bookmark / History Backups

Type about:support<Enter> in the address bar.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Enter the bookmarkbackups folder. This is where Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks. Look for the jsonlz4 file you want to restore (check the time / date / size). Right click on that file and select Copy. Now go back to the profile folder where you started. Rename the file places.sqlite by adding .old to it. Now right click in the folder and select Paste. The file you just pasted here, rename it to places.sqlite. After you are done, restart Firefox.

You would have to copy the places.sqlite file from the previously used profile to the current profile folder. You can also try to restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder of the previous profile.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
