I just downloaded firefox 7.0.1 and when I try to open it I get a firefox.exe - application error stating "instruction at 0x1000863c referenced memory at 0x1000863c. The memory could not be read." The application never opens. what can I do?
As stated above I get an error message when I try to open Firefox. The options given in the message are "click OK to terminate program" or "click CANCEL to deug program".

Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Yes, I still get the error notice in safe mode.
What anti-virus/firewall/etc do you run?
Can you open the profile manager without a crash? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
I use CA Security Center.
No I can't even open the Profile Manager, it gives me the same error message.

Have you run a malware scan (I recommend http://www.malwarebytes.org/ - free edition)?
I have now downloaded an older version of firefox and it seems to be working as long as I don't use the google homepage or search.
I am guessing that my computer is just to old to support the 7.0.1 version.
