(1-7-23, Windows 10): My problem for the past month is that FF won't keep me logged into sites where I specifically ask to stay logged in. It remembers my passwords but will not keep me logged in to Amazon, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. This is a home computer only used by me so I don't want to be logged out. Also, I get messages from sites saying there's a login from a new browser and I keep having to confirm it's me. It will work for a day, but when I start the computer on the next day, I'm logged out of everything.

I have done all these things:

  • Refreshed FF
  • Uninstalled & reinstalled FF
  • Cleared the Cache
  • Cleared Cookies
  • Settings: Remember History
  • No checkmark for Private Browsing
  • Tried turning off Enhanced Tracking Protection for affected sites
  • Tried changing Privacy to Custom, and un-checked Cookies to allow them
  • No checkmark for "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed"

I think I have solved the problem after re-starting or completely turning computer off and on again, as long as it's the same day. The next day it's like it's a whole new FF browser. This started a month ago or so. Can anyone help? Nothing I do seems to work. Thanks!

Did you also check the settings for "Clear history when Firefox closes" as those can still be set to clear Cookies or "Site settings" ?

Detail like websites remembering you and log you in automatically is stored in cookies, so make sure you aren't clearing important cookies.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you.

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you

You can check that you aren't clearing important cookies.

  • using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" to clear cookies keeps cookies with an allow exception
    in 102+ version toggling this setting makes changes to the "Clear history when Firefox closes" settings and those settings prevail
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" in Firefox 102+ honors exceptions and keeps cookies with an allow exception, previous versions removed all cookies

Make sure to keep the "Site settings".

  • clearing "Site settings" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Exceptions"
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
    Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":
    [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" -> Settings

Thanks for your reply. That's already how I have FF set up, but I added some exceptions just to try them. I'll be able to tell tomorrow if it works, but I think I've tried that before and it didn't do anything. I really wish I could fix this.

Have you checked these help tips?

Maybe one of these settings was changed. But remember if you close and restart the Browser they will always log you out but if AutoFill/Save is working you just type the login and if saved will fill the rest of the login for each box. I know it works for my setup in Firefox as I can login faster with it. But closing and or reopening or restarting the computer will log you out of the logged in sites.

Thank you Dropa. I've done all those things Mozilla suggested. Also, this doesn't happen on MS Edge, so it's not my computer, just FF. And you said: "But closing and or reopening or restarting the computer will log you out of the logged in sites." I'm not sure why that is. I specifically ask to stay logged in on yahoo, for instance, but when it's a new day, I'm logged out. I'm also sick of getting messages that there's been a login from a new computer on other sites. Nothing is working. But thanks for trying :)

Does it work if you leave tabs open and use "Restore Previous Session" as in that case sessionstore handles the cookies ?

Are you using external cleanup software that could remove those cookies ?

An update: I tried everything you suggested, but nothing worked. Then I tried clearing the cache (which I had done before without success). At around the same time, Dell did a computer update (not a Windows update). The problem is fixed. Now, which one of those things did it? My suspicion is that it was the Dell update, but I'll never know. But at least now I don't get a brand new Firefox every day and I can stay logged into websites. Thank you for all your suggestions.
