re :after installing the new update

What version were you using before updating? What version have you updated to? How did you update? Was it an auto update? Did you uninstall the previous Thunderbird and get a fresh new download from here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

This was an auto update to thunderbird 60.6.1 32 bit. Weird thing is my laptop which was in closet and had not been used for two weeks prior , also will not get email. I reformated the hard drive and did a fresh install of win10 thinking it might be a virus, and still same problem.

thank you for reply JAC

re :I reformated the hard drive and did a fresh install of win10

This would have deleted everything on that computer.

Did you perform a backup of your profile name folder or the roaming/Thunderbird folder prior to reformatting etc?

I presume you reinstalled Thunderbird and tried to create a new mail account. Did you succeed in creating the mail account?

What type of mail account is it Pop or Imap? When you say will not get mail, do you mean you are constantly asked for password which fails? Do you get an error message if yes, what is it...word for word?

Are you able to logon to your webmail account via a browser and get access to the webmail account to see emails? Please do this to verify your password works and report back on results.

What server are you trying to access? gmail ?

no i did not back anything up and reinstalled everything new. it's on IMAP and yes i am able to log on with browser, but not third party programs such as microsoft outlook and a few random email programs.

I am trying to access my Charter (Spectrum) account. it recognizes the account and password but when i go to test it keeps failing.

To create the account did you do this:

  • 'Menu icon' > New Messages > Existing Mail account
  • Enter name
  • Enter full email address
  • Enter Password - same one as used to access webmail
  • select checkbox to remember password
  • click on 'Continue'

Thunderbird tries to find configuration settings.

  • click on 'Cancel' to stop auto setup.
  • click on 'Manual Config' button
  • Incoming: Imap
  • incoming server name: mobile.charter.net
  • Port : 993
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Password or Autodetect.
  • Username: full email address
  • Incoming: SMTP
  • incoming server name: mobile.charter.net
  • Port : 587
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Password or Autodetect.
  • Username: full email address

click on 'Re-test'

Please check your Firewall which may be part of your Anti-Virus program. Thunderbird must be listed as an allowed program.

Please confirm you can see Thunderbird is listed as an allowed program.

more options

yes my firewall has a listing to allow thunderbird.

I noticed that when i test microsoft outlook with this configuration that when it finished running test's and reporting an error , the browser email shows a email test sent.

and i do not have an antivirus program only the standard win10 security apps.

As this occurred after an upgrade: In Thunderbird

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • click on 'Open Folder' button

A new window opens showing contents of profile name folder.

Exit Thunderbird now.
