This is happening almost every time I try to use T-Bird. I get a "Not Responding" message & have to close the program. Windows 7 using Avast.

Wayne, I had the problem all day yesterday and closed the computer normally at the end of the day. Today T-Bird has been working glitch free. No changes have been made other than the normal start up. I am sorry I did not try your suggestion & I thank you for being part of the community.

Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does problem go away? Please reply to let me know results.

WHich specific problem are you referring to - that you are freezing, or crashing, or https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1120980 ?
The message says "thunderbird has stopped working", then goes into trying to fix it. I then cancel and have to manually close the program. I now have to re launch T Bird. This happens quite often.

So this message is issued by Windows.
It never hurts to try safe mode and is often a helpful test, although it seems to be way too often ignored and not recommended ...
