I just upgraded to the latest Firefox. In the process there were some options for the Search window. I clicked on something that, when I start typing a word or phrase in the window, a drop-down list appears below the window with suggestions. This drives me nuts! How do I disable the auto-suggestions? In Options/Search I have NOT checked "Provide search suggestions."

If you want to restore the previously used standalone window to manage search engines then you can toggle this pref to false with a middle-click on the about:config page.

  • about:config page: browser.search.showOneOffButtons = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Turning off suggestions should remove any new, dynamically retrieved suggestions. However, do you have the default setting of allowing Firefox to save search history? (This is combined with the feature to save entries you make on web forms.) In that case, you might see matching entries from history. However, you would know better than me whether the items on the list sound like searches you've made previously.

(This new design for that search drop-down was just finished last week so we're all feeling our way along a bit.)

Ok, but how do I turn off suggestions? I've no more time tonight, but after I got your response I did a search and found this link below. No time to follow thru.

I also lost the Google Scholar option that I had when I made a search. I had to add it back in just now, but it's a bit clunky in the new iteration. I don't like the drop-down menus when doing a search, and I don't want to get use to them! Pass it on...

Thank you jscher. May we meet again!

Thank you cor-el. I opened the link you sent and it looks straightforward, will try it tomorrow, no time tonight. Thank you!

That worked! Much better now, many thanks!

I still miss the Google Scholar link when I would right click on a highlighted phrase, but I've added it to the Search drop-down menu.

My only problem was that it took many attempts to open the about:config page. The solution may have been to try it in a new tab. When I did that, I was able to quickly make the change and restart my computer.
