master password blues -- still!

I'm returning to TBird after several years, and when I open the program I'm prompted for a master password. I'm not sure I ever had one. In any case, I followed all of the community suggestions, even deleting the key3.db file and still no luck. When I click cancel after unsuccessfully trying a password, I get this:

"Login to server imap.googlemail.com failed"

I'd really like to use TBird again, but I'm so frustrated I'm thinking against it. Does someone know a work around?

If you are getting the error message you quoted, you are being asked for your email password to your gmail account and not a master password.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, and still no success.

Its not a suggestion. It is a fact.

Here is how to erase a master password and the side effect is it will erase any old stored passwords too. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password Then you can start fresh. I suggest you go to gmail and make sure you can log in there. That will verify you have a working password.
