When I tried to update Firefox, I got a message that my system, an Apple laptop (PowerBook G4, 10.4.11) does not meet the system requirements and that the Firefox version I am now using is unstable and insecure. Is there a Firefox version that I can use with my vintage Mac that will be safe to use?

This is still supported, but in time it to won't be, sooner or later you will have to go back to Apple's browser.
