There is a graphic that looks like a wave, which covers the top inch and a half of my home page. It doesn't show up on Explorer, so I'm wondering if it's some kind of virus on Firefox.

Can you give us the link to the site?

You can check the connection setting here: Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select No Proxy

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.
