New Thunderbird wont allow me to send to more than one address. Wont display emails as read after opening.

I have the latest Thunderbird installed and have recently changed computers. For some reason there is a solid black line at the top of my inbox. When a new email comes in and I open and read it, it will still appear unread in bold. If I try and hit reply to that email and add another email address in, it wont let me. The original email address is highlighted in gray. Thanks!
