I can successfully install and use a theme. But after just closing and reopening Firefox, the theme goes away, and I'm back on the default one. This problem only occurs with themes, as my other extensions and plugins are kept.

I am using Firefox 41.0.2 on Xubuntu 14.04

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Is this a complete them or a lightweight theme (Persona) that style the user interface area with a background image?

Try the version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution to see if this still happens.

You can also check for issues caused by extensions added by Ubuntu.
