I just upgraded to Firefox version 3.6.4 and now when I got to this web page http://www.hagsplace.com/FI-How-2-Video/FI%20Service%20Kit%20Install%20Vid%20with%20audio2.html I get the error message that I need to download the newest version of Adobe Flash Player, but it worked fine before the upgrade, and when I try to do the upgrade it calls for, it says download and install complete but message to upgrade still shows up after I restart Firefox.

Hello Mike.

Mozilla has a handy page that will help up update your plugins (on any browser): https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/

If you are still having problems with all plugins up to date, you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode and select Disable all add-ons. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See this article for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.

If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

All my plugins are up to date. Never had the problems with 3.6.3. 3.6.4 is BUGGY.

Thanks for the info Morbus, disabled all my addons, but problem still remains, and I discovered a new one.

After restarting Firefox and rebooting the computer, a few other web pages I tried to go to that also required Adobe Flash came up and said "plugin is required to view this page, I chose the download plugin option, clicked allow, and it downloaded and installed Adobe Flash and the pages reloaded and worked fine.

Then I rebooted the computer a little bit later, tried to go back to those same pages, and the missing plugin message was there again. I chose the install plugin option again, allowed the install, and the pages worked, but if I shut down Firefox, and then restart it, the pages all come back saying that the plugin needs installed. : (

Is there a way to revert back to my earlier version of Firefox?

Thanks in advance! Mike

@ Anonymous If you are having a problem with a specific add-on, you need to contact it's author for support. I remind you that plugins are made for the browser, not the other way around.

@ Anonymous Your problem is of a different nature, and should relatively simpler to fix. If I understand it correctly, you can install and use plugins without a problem, it's just that after you restart Firefox, the plugins are gone. Right?

Ok, if this is the case, I'll need you to make one or two tests to detect what's actually going on. First of all, to know which plugins you have installed, go into Tools > Add-ons > Plugins. There, you'll see a list of all plugins you have installed. Some may be enabled, others may be disabled. You can, from this screen, disable and enable installed plugins as you see fit. You can also click Find Updates to go to a page that will help you update your plugins.

Now, please make sure "Shockwave Flash" is installed and enabled. Then, go to a page with a flash object. A YouTube video works for that. Can you see the video? If you can't (and if Shockwave Flash is installed and enabled), please tell me so I can instruct you on how to fix the issue. If you can see the video, please close Firefox and open it again. After opening Firefox again, go into Tools > Add-ons > Plugins and see if "Shockwave Flash" is still installed and enabled. Can you tell me how that goes, please?

Hello Morbus,

I'm not sure what's going on here and if you are replying to my posts or to this anonymous who posted directly beneath your first response to my original post.

My problem is this, I just updated Firefox to 3.6.4, I went to one of my website pages that has a Camtasia video file loaded and could no longer view it. I get a message saying I need to install a newer version of Adobe. This page was viewable before I did the upgrade with my earlier version of Firefox, I believe it was 3.6.3.

So I went ahead and followed the link to upgrade Adobe, clicked the download and install button on Adobe's page, clicked the allow button on the top rh corner of Firefox window, was given the install successful and complete message from Adobe, restarted Firefox, went back to webpage, message still there saying I need to upgrade to newer version of Adobe.

I viewed a few other tabs that I had open at the time and some of the other pages had Catasia video files on them and I was able to view them, just not the one particular page I mentioned in my first post. Not sure what to do at this point I re-booted the computer.

Upon restarting Firefox, the same message still remained on my website page that I initially noticed the problem. But now other pages were coming up with messages saying plugins were needed to view videos as well, these were pages that had been able to show the videos AFTER the upgrade to 3.6.4, but now Firefox was saying the plugins were not installed. so I went ahead and followed the download link and installed the plugins, the pages then reloaded and I was able to view them, except the initial page I was having problems with, that page still showed message about needing to upgrade Adobe.

I shut down Firefox and rebooted my computer, opened Firefox again, and all the messages were back, the original page with the message to update Adobe was still there, and the other pages that I had problems with and reinstalled the required plugins, were now showing up again saying I needed to install the plugins.

So I reinstalled them, again, and they worked fine, except the original problem page. I posted all of this earlier and have since restarted Firefox yet again. Now it seems that all the plugins have remained and I have not had to reinstall them. But the original page problem still remains. I cannot view the video as it tells me I need to upgrade Adobe, and when I do, I get a message saying install complete, but message still remains.

I have also noticed that since upgrading, one of my toolbars that allows me to download videos seems to be working and I got no message saying it was not compatible with this version of Firefox, but it now no longer downloads video files. I think I would really like to just "downgrade" back to my earlier version of Firefox, but was not sure if this was something easily done. I have back ups of my profile via a program I have used for a while called MozBackUp. Latest backup is only a week old.

Is there anyway to unistall the upgrade and revert to earlier version without doing a complete un-install of existing Firefox and re-installing the earlier version? Thanks again for your help in this matter.

Morbus,

sorry, I just realized that when I post a reply, I need to fill in my name, so 2 of my replies have been listed as anonymous. There was one anonymous reply after your first reply to my original post and I thought you were replying to that post and not mine. anyway I just reposted all my info above, any suggestions?

Confusion cleared Mike.

Although you did not answer the questions I made here.

Yes, having similar problems, everything worked fine until the new upgrade, it's very buggy and seems to be especially so with Adobe. How do we revert?

Anonymous, update your plugins here. If you are having a problem with a specific plugin, you need to contact its author for support.

Hi, Morbus, I have already done that, I have checked my plugins, which are all showing up to date, I have uninstalled and reinstalled and everything else, and it does not work with this new update. Which is ironic because it is touting itself as the version that will no longer crash adobe but I never had problems with flash before and now that I have the upgrade it no longer works.

Also, the Download Manager no longer displays.

Hello Morbus,

I didn't respond to your previous question as I thought it was only directed to me if I was having a problem with plugins needing to continuously be re-installed. After the initial instance of this is has not happened again. The plugins have all remained after restarts and there has been no need to re-install. I tried your suggestions anyway with the plugins.

Below is a list of all my plugins I went to the plugin check/update page and about half of them are listed as updated, and the others are listed as "Unable to detect plugin version.

I went to Youtube.com as you suggested and was able to view a video, and shut down Firefox and restarted and still able to view videos and I seem to be able to view videos on other pages, including pages which have video created by Camtasia in them.

It just seems to be this one particular page that I mentioned in my first post. And no matter how many times I click the button to upgrade Adobe, and install it, and get the message that says install successful / complete. I still get the message when I return to the page that says I need to update Adobe.

I'm at a loss here as what else to do. I should have backed up Firefox before I did the upgrade, I usually do but of course I never seem to have problems with the upgrades. And the one time I do have a problem, I didn't back up beforehand. : /

I'm open to any other suggestions you may have at this point, short of uninstalling and complete re-install of the older version where this problem did not exist I don't know what else to try.

I was hoping there might be some way to "rollback" to the previous version of Firefox so I don't have to do a complete re-install and restore but I'm afraid it looks like I may have to. If you require any other information from me or want me to try anything else just let me know.

Thanks again in advance for all your help with this problem.

Mike here again Morbus,

I wanted to add one other thing I noticed, on one of my many attempts to get the Adobe upgrade to "take" the Adobe Download Manager popped up. This had not occurred on previous attempts to upgrade Adobe. I thought maybe this would finally allow the upgrade to take effect. But the download manager ran through the download and install, got to 100%, then said "Install Failed". It gave no explanation for the failure and no way to retry. Just gave the option to close the Download Manager. Not sure if this has any bearing on all this or not, but wanted to let you know in case it does.

Thanks again! Mike

You'll need to ask Adobe for support on that one (I'm starting to sound like a broken record :( ). It's conceivably possible that the specific website that is not working just needs you to update your Flash player... Do tell me which page it is though, please.

I thought I'd mention that I have the same problem with embedded videos since updating Firefox and Adobe Flash this morning. In my case a blank spot appears on the page where the embedded video was. When I go directly to youtube using Firefox the picture now disappears when I play a video although the audio does play. I'm using OS X 10.4.11

David, you probably need to contact Adobe for support, if you find that you are having troubles with their Shockwave Flash plugin. It's their software.

I will contact Adobe, but should mention that youtube videos play correctly on Safari but are audio-only on Firefox. That is, on the youtube site. I've discovered that the embedded youtube videos on the other site will also play audio if I click rapidly and repeatedly on the blank spot. With Safari the snapshot of the video appears (no blank spot) but again doesn't play until you click repeatedly. In this case instead of playing locally it opens the video on the youtube site, and this time you do get video but it's jerky.

Hello again Morbus,

I guess the problem could be with the page itself, I didn't think so since I was able to view the page/video before the upgrade without any problems, it was only after the upgrade to 3.6.4 that the problem developed. I didn't post the link to the page again in my other posts since I had posted it already in my first post. I was just trying to save space and avoid duplicity. Here is the link to the page. http://www.hagsplace.com/FI-How-2-Video/FI%20Service%20Kit%20Install%20Vid%20with%20audio2.html

And yes I prefer to keep my software updated and would prefer NOT to revert back to version 3.6.3. But with this viewing problem on the above page, as well as the problem with my toolbar Freecorder no longer appearing to function with this new version, I'm afraid I may need to "go back" to Firefox 3.6.3 : (

As for the Adobe Download Manager pop up, on the numerous times that I followed the link to "upgrade" Adobe, I was taken to the Adobe download/install page and ran the install from there, and then was taken to the Adobe, success/complete page, so I thought the download and install was successful.

When I tried for the 4th or 5th time to do this procedure, the Adobe Download Manager suddenly "popped up" and ran along in the background, while the install from the Adobe download/install page ran in the foreground. I thought the problem was Adobe Download Manager not running during the previous attempts. So now I am confused as to what's happening during the install.

According to the Adobe website, the download and installation was successful, and it says so on the final page, the little icon at the top of the page is working and the text below says if you can see the icon above your installation was successful. But the Adobe Download Manager, when it decides to show up, says the installation failed. But it does run through the download, up to 100%, and then runs again through the install, and again the bar goes up to 100%. But then it flashes to another screen and says "Installation Failed", with no explanation or option to try again, just the close option.

I guess I will try to contact Adobe as you have suggested. I just figured that since the problem only happened after the upgrade to Firefox 3.6.4, they're going to say it's a problem with Firefox, not their software.

Thanks again for everything, and good luck to everyone else who seems to be having a similar problem... ahhh..the joys of computers ; )

Here's a weird glitch: As previously mentioned, when I go to youtube using Firefox, and click on a play button the picture disappears and I only get audio; and when I go to a site with an embedded youtube video, there is only a blank space where the video should be. I mentioned this to the guy who is running the site and he sent me a link to the youtube page via e-mail. When I clicked on this link, I was able to watch the video. There's also a link on the website but if I use that one I only get the audio. (Again, if I go directly to youtube using Firefox, same result; and not only for this particular video.)
