Version: 60.2.1 [don't want to update]
I think you have to.
Why would the version stop it connecting to server?
I don't know. But Google requires the use of OAuth2 authentication, and there have been changes to it since v60.2.1. So it won't work for your old version.
Modified
Without me trying every version, do you know the earliest which should work for me?
Thanks for your help.
From 60.2.1 go to 68.9.0, then 78.9.1. From there you should be able to use the built-in update mechanism to get to the latest release version. Make sure to backup your Thunderbird profile before starting with the upgrade. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
Thanks for backup link.
Reason I don't want latest version is that every time it updates, more extensions aren't compatible, and most can't keep up - latest version has hardly any useful extensions. And older versions seem adequate for my purposes. Is there earlier version than 68.9 which should send/receive emails?
Does a change in number before decimal point indicate major update?
Can I merge profiles? On updating, I lost address books or they displayed as empty. I have 8 profiles backed up now - can I merge them all, then sort through what I don't want?
Thanks for your help.

There are add-ons which didn't make the cut. In that case I'd suggest you look for alternative ones. The situation isn't as bad as it may look. The good news is the constant breaking of add-ons with TB updates should happen much less with the new MailExtensions architecture. Also some functionality may be built-in now, and no add-on is needed anymore. Check the release notes. https://www.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/releases/

I don't remember that, but I believe there isn't. You'd have to try. I believe it doesn't pay off sticking to old version in the long run, at some point it will bite you. In addition you always run a vulnerable version with known security flaws.

I'm not sure what you want to merge, as I wouldn't expect any differences wrt contacts in those profile backups.
I downloaded 68.9 and put copy of 60.2.1 profile in the profile folder, then opened Thunderbird using that profile. It "Could not connect to mail server".
Should I have prefs-1.js to prefs-63.js? And sessionmanager-1.dat to sessionmanager-4.dat.
As well as Junk for 1 account, it shows Spam (it did before). In Gmail, Spam's hidden and the imap checkbox unchecked.
Can't find alternatives for any incompatible extensions, and none built-in. If 68.9 has MailExtensions architecture, can I reinstall the original extensions?
Importing Address Book text files, I get the attached. How do I know what record data to import, or where it'll import.
Thank you.

I don't understand this. There is no need to copy the profile, you just start Thunderbird with the existing one after having it backed up. Why did you stop at v68.9? For OAuth2 to work, update to the latest release version.
Should I have prefs-1.js to prefs-63.js? And sessionmanager-1.dat to sessionmanager-4.dat.
No, you shouldn't. These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.
Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile
Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.
Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.
Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.
Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.
Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird
And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

What exactly did you do to get to this point?
Thanks for your help.

I thought I needed to do this to keep my previous settings?
I stopped at v68.9 because this Thunderbird version is the one I used until recently, which was able to download emails. So why can it not now? And because I don't want to lose more extensions which don't have equivalents compatible with latest version.
Can I safely delete prefs-1.js to prefs-63.js & sessionmanager-1.dat to sessionmanager-4.dat? So long as I keep prefs.js & sessionmanager.dat.
Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.
I don't know what this means. Do you happen to have Kaspersky, to be able to advise the setting to change?
To reach the above screenshot in Address Book, I tap Tools > Options > Address Books > Text file > All Files > open old backed up abook.mab.
As well as Junk for 1 account, it shows Spam (it did before). In Gmail, Spam's hidden and the imap checkbox unchecked.

You do not need to copy profiles around for a TB upgrade, the profile always remains the same. The reason to create a profile backup prior to an upgrade is that you can restore the backup in case something goes wrong.
I stopped at v68.9 because this Thunderbird version is the one I used until recently, which was able to download emails.
As said before, Google now requires OAuth2 authentication for 3rd-party email applications, and that won't work with v68.9.
So why can it not now?
Try to start Windows 10 in safe mode with networking enabled. Does the problem go away?
Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. This is a troubleshooting step, not a solution.

Possibly. But this isn't your problem right now, so I'd leave that alone for the time being, until you get going again.

You need to select the "Mork Database (.mab)" format when trying to importing abook.mab.
Thanks for your help.
I updated to v99.0b2 and changed Kaspersky setting, but it still wouldn't connect to server. I found something other than user selection had changed setting to 'Automatic proxy' (no address stated), so changed it back to 'No proxy' and reverted to v68.9, which connected to server. With 99.0b2, I lost use of all 7 extensions, and there were no alternatives.
This has been main reason for not wanting to update, and having automatically updated to v68.12.1, I selected 'let me choose whether to install them'. I won't install any. I used to update all software inc drivers on seeing new versions available, but it caused more problems than it was worth. Don't try to fix something which works.
Something other than user selection has since changed setting to 'system proxy'. I don't use one, but it's working.
68.12.1 connects with/without OAuth2 authentication, though I've chosen OAuth2.
It's disappointing so many people used to write useful extensions, only to find they were made incompatible repeatedly (without having their functions built into Thunderbird). As result, those left aren't as useful. 1 example is the oft-quoted MoreFunctionsForAddressBook. Knowledgebase says "Other address books (such as "abook-1.mab") can not be copied from profile to profile this way because by default Thunderbird only knows about the "Personal Address Book" and "Collected Addresses" address books." If things like this are known, why aren't they corrected?
I'm using new profile created with this 68.9 installation. Importing Mork database isn't option, but I think above link provides answer.
Where do I find last profile's adaptive junk filter log (not copied to new profile)? Apart from filters, is anything else not copied to new profile?
Thanks.

Importing Mork database isn't option
You'd need to export address books you created in ldif format first.
Apart from filters, is anything else not copied to new profile?
Not sure what you mean. See if this helps. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Thunderbird
