I can receive but not send messages for an Outlook server.

Error message says: "The mail server responded: 5.7.57 SMTP; Client was not authenticated to send anonymous emails during MAIL FROM." I see in security settings there's no password entry for outgoing mail on this server, just for incoming. There are separate password entries for incoming and outgoing mail on both my other email accounts. I was not asked for a password at any time during setup and don't see how to add one.

Is your keene.edu address the User name for account 5, the one with office365 servers? I realize Keene uses Office365 for their email, but I don't see anywhere on their IT site instructions for setting up POP or IMAP accounts in programs like TB. They do describe how to set up EAS (Exchange ActiveSync, similar to IMAP) access on mobile devices, but POP or IMAP has to be 'turned on' by the mail administrator. So, I suggest you ask them if POP and IMAP access are allowed in TB and what are the correct server settings.

Also, check in Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved passwords to Remove any obsolete entries and perhaps delete the existing ones for the office365 account so you will be prompted to enter the password at the next connection.

Thanks for your response, I tried safe mode but still got the same message when trying to send an email using the Outlook server. Here is the troubleshooting information you asked for. I truncated a bit at the end as it was over 10,000 characters:

If you open Tools/Account Settings, then select Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left pane, then select the smtp.office365.com server, Edit..., change the authentication method to 'Normal password'. When you next send from that account, you should be prompted for the password, which you can then set to be 'remembered' and stored in security/password Options. (If you have 2-step verification, create an app password and use that as the password in TB).

I recommend you also set the incoming POP server to use port 995, SSL/TLS security, authentication = normal password, and User name = email address.

Thanks so much!!

Well, it worked at the time, but now there's a new snag. When I open Thunderbird I get an error message:

Sending of password for user [email protected] did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

I have not changed the username or password, so I don'tknow what to do about this.
