So my computer crashed so I no longer have the device with me technically as I am trying to retrieve my old bookmarks etc. With FF26, i logged in and clicked i lost the old device so a new key was generated, when i used that i was told it's wrong. -->i did this before when i reinstalled my system and it worked i thought maybe changing the recovery key might help which it didn't. then I saw the bolded word saying by changing revovery key, I effectively erased my old data with data on this new device.

is that true? I am crying so hard...T.T

thanks in advance!

Sorry, that is true.

The Recovery Key was used as the encryption key for Sync while the user data is off their devices; change it and the user data can't be decrypted.

In what way did the computer crash?

Did that make it necessary to reinstall Windows or even get a new hard drive?

the hard drive was replaced but i assume it was no different than when i reinstalled the system to factory default in terms of syncing?

Just two FYIs

  • Your Firefox is out of date, update to Firefox 30.
  • Firefox Sync never was intended to be a backup system, and shouldn't be used as such,
