After a system crash I restarted firefox and noticed I did not have a restore session option as usual. I immediately copy off the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak to a safe place and read up on how I could fix the problem but nothing seems to work. I have the .bak file which is 1.5 mb. I closed firefox, renamed the .bak to .js and placed it in the library/cache folder for firefox where the former was and re-opened firefox. The restore session page does come up but no sessions are listed. I doubt the file is corrupt as I copied out of the folder as soon as I noticed trouble when I restarted firefox after a crash. I am running firefox 8.0.1 on a mac running os 10.6.4. Please help.

What is the startup setting?

You need this setting to make Firefox use a sessionstore.js file.

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: When Firefox Starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time

yes, it is set that way and it still does not show the old session. Just and empty choice box with no tabs or windows listed. Looks like Firefox is not opening the sessionstore.js file whether this setting is on or I force the page with about:sessionrestore.

Did you check if there are recently closed windows available?

Yes, but they are only the few windows I have closed in my attemps to get back the old session. I have the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak copied off from when this first happened and am trying to get firefox to read them but something is not working. I renamed the bak file as js and placed it where it is supposed to go but it does not show the old session when I reopen firefox.

Maybe that sessionstore.bak file doesn't have those lost pages.

You can check this MozillaZine forum thread for some procedures to extract links from a sessionstore file.
