Every time I start FF I see a window showing "FireFox software updater. Do you want to up date Yes/no?" If I say yes I see a message that FF is installing a new update. If I browse with FF for a few minutes, close it down and then re-start it i see the same message again.

I have not closed the PC so this is not a re-start but I do not understand why FF wants to keep updating. Are updates being issued every 5 or 10 minutes?

Try a refresh:

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Thanks for reporting a fake update. Please see the article I found a fake Firefox update.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista if you don't already have one. Windows 8/10 have antivirus protection built-in.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Thank you for your help and speedy reply. I have scanned my PC using both Malware Bytes Premium and MS Windows Defender (I am using Win 10 v1709). Neither found anything bad. I have looked at the Troubleshoot FF pages you suggested but none seem relevant to this event.

When I opened FF to be able to post this message I again saw the Software updater window.

regards,

Tregarth
