After closing browser, I cannot re-open it. It reports that it is still running. Clicking the "close Firefox" option has no effect. Task Manager shows no applications running. I have to close and re-open Windows to before I can restart Firefox. Only started recently, not had this prob in years of using Firefox.

Thanks

So you are saying no firefox.exe is seen in task manager. Look for plugincontainer , do you see that it could be some plugin like flashplayer not exiting cleanly. If you see that kill it with task manager.

Can you attach a screenshot of the actual message please.

Also try looking for any recent crash reports. Key about:crashes into the location bar. It is the Crash ID starting with bp-that would be useful. (The forum software converts them to links after you post them)

You need to check the Processes tab and not Application to see if there is still a Firefox process or plugin-container process active

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
