In the last few itterations of Firefox I haven't been able to work bookmarks at all. The first problem is, you save a bookmark but where does it go? In most browsers and Firefox until a few months ago the bookmark was immediately visible in the bookmark list. Now the only things under the bookmark icon are a load of meaningless headings that lead nowhere I want to go. All I want is to be able to create a list of meaningful bookmarks that I can get to without having to navigate so far I might as well search for them all over again. Googling this question, I got a terrific reply - 13 steps to set up your bookmarks in Firefox, I thought the point was to only have one.

Creating a new bookmark works like this:

  • Clicking the star on the Navigation toolbar will bookmark the page in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to show that
  • Bookmarks > "Bookmark This Page" (Ctrl+D) will bookmark the page in the Bookmarks Menu folder (you need to confirm that)
  • "Bookmark This Page" can be accessed via the right-click context menu in the browsing area or via the Bookmarks menu in the Firefox menu button drop down or menu bar (Alt+B)
  • If the URL in the Navigation toolbar is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click this highlighted star or use the "Bookmark This Page/Edit This Bookmark" menu item (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark like name and location and move the bookmark to another folder or remove the bookmark

Try Ctrl + Shift + O, you'll be able to see all your bookmarks, they will probably be in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" category. It goes there by default, but if you want them to go in your Bookmark toolbar, you just have to drag-and-drop the tab where you want on the toolbar.

Ctrl + Shift + O ??? on a Windows PC ? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/keyboard-shortcuts-perform-firefox-tasks-quickly

{ Ctrl + Shift + B } opens the Library window, which displays your bookmarks, along with download and browsing history. And { Ctrl + B } opens the Bookmarks Sidebar.

The basics of working with bookmarks hasn't changed much in many years. Although some of the user interface has been changes a few times with regards to bookmarks. Click the "Star" once and the new bookmark is saved to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder. The same as it has been since Firefox 4.0. There was a change to the appearance and placement of the "Star" in Firefox 29 and 30, but the functionality is the the same. Click the "Star" a 2nd time and you see the "Edit the bookmark" dialog, which allows you to select a folder for that new bookmark to be placed in. Same as it has been for a long time.

Oops, i'm currently running firefox under linux :)

Thanks very much for that - it works! I realise I've been avoiding creating bookmarks most of the year because I didn't have the time to figure it out. I think it's an 'easy when you know how' solution. Thanks again to everyone who responded.

PS when I googled the problem the support page didn't come up.
