Open containing folder-Launch application-empty in Linux
I am using Firefox 26 in Kubuntu 12.04 and when I click on the download arrow, then click on "Open containing folder" icon on any of the items downloaded, I get sent to the "Launch Application" dialog. In Windows this is automatic and just opens but in Linux it needs to be filled in. What folder do I navigate to, so that Firefox will execute Dolphin?

Hi ,
I am using Fedora but Firefox behaves same as windows does ! Can you check in preferences where all your download goes ?
Try to do a full install of Firefox from Mozilla.org. Let us know how you do.
Fedora must have FF preinstalled or it somehow reads directories different. When I used Mint it was already there and worked fine. For some reason in Kubuntu it's not configured, and FF is not preinstalled.
I just did a fresh install of FF today. I have had this problem since April 2012 through every update/version. There is no need to install from mozilla since it's the same as the repos provide.
So my question is, what directory do I navigate to, so I can tell Firefox to execute Dolphin. I can get to my downloads by opening Dolphin manually but I want Firefox to work as it should.
The only thing I can think of is; open your file explorer. Go to the root directory. Start search, tell options to search all folders, and search for the NAME of the downloaded file. Just the name, not the extension. Then sit back and wait for the computer to show you a list. This way take a while.
fred, you misunderstand. In Kubuntu Dolphin is the file explorer, like "Windows Explorer" in windows. It's the program that you use to search, display and organize files. It's not something I have downloaded.
In Linux we don't have .exe files but if we did Dolphin would be an .exe , so I am trying to tell Firefox to link Dolphin as an action to open a folder (in Dolphin) that contains a downloaded file.
I'm not trying to find a downloaded file, I am trying to let FF know what program to execute so I can navigate directly as opposed to opening Dolphin manually and then to each and every folder I have downloaded files into.
I know I need to go to Root someplace but all program files are not located in the same folder and I don't know enough to get there on my own.
Ahh, I see. Sorry. I misunderstood your problem. I don't know Linux. The Launch application you spoke of, is there any options? On my Firefox, Firefox Options > Applications opens a list of file types and what FF does with them. See if you have something like that.
Okay, sorry to say this but this sort of error feels a bit sloppy, especially as it's been a problem for awhile. Especially on a distro package update or installer. Ever since the update to Firefox 24 ESR it's been a problem and I'm reading its an old problem off and on. I'm reading a few things about messing with config files but an update should be fixing issues, not introducing ones like this. There are workarounds but it's annoying, especially to users who don't know about the config scripts. Somebody needs to fix this properly. It seems a pretty basic thing to do. (and should be a high priority in my opinion since it was a feature that worked in previous versions).
