Okay this is possibly a strange one.

Since about the start of April I have had a recurring problem with Firefox where when the contents of a tab refresh (for example, on the tumblr dashboard), the contents of said window will appear over the top of any other window I have open.

For example: I have firefox open with the tumblr dash open, or with echofon enabled, and I also have (for example) Excel open with a spreadsheet I am working on.

Both windows are maximised, and Excel is in focus - over the top of Firefox.

Firefox is not visible at this stage, except for its bar on the taskbar.

Firefox then refreshes tumblr/echofon/whatever it is that is refreshing.

This for some reason causes the Firefox window to be rendered over whatever is currently in focus - for example Excel - but does not bring Firefox into focus. To get rid of this I have to bring Firefox into focus and then go back to the program I was using.

Are these ordinary web pages -- it doesn't seem to be specifically related to media players that write directly to the screen?

Could you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved?

Hi,

You can try deselecting Raise or lower windows in Tools (Alt + T) > Options > Content > Advanced (beside Enable Javascript), if it is selected.

Options > Content

They were just ordinary web pages, yes - the 'refresh' would actually display -over- any maximised flash content (a youtube video, say), which was driving me up the wall

But disabling the hardware acceleration and restarting FF seems to have done the trick! Thank you :)
