In firefox my printed pages come out illegible. Strangely, when I printed a map page from Mapquest, the street names were legible, but the text outside of the map were illegible.

Illegible or pure garbage that looks like an alien language?
If you have a Canon printer, install the latest print drivers for that printer.
Sometimes printing from the Print button the Print Preview window gets around that problem

If that doesn't fix it, you may be seeing an unresolved Bug in Firefox that affects some print drivers and certain fonts.
