Why do I have to re-register with my banking website to remember my settings in order to not need two-factor authentication? I have selected in Preferences/settings for that website's cookies, etc, to be retained in Firefox.

Certainly! When you have to re-register with your banking website to retain settings and avoid two-factor authentication (2FA), there are a few factors to consider:

1. **Bank-Specific Security Protocols**: Banks often enforce stringent security measures, and re-registration might be one of them to ensure account safety, especially for features like 2FA.

2. **Browser Settings**: Despite selecting preferences to retain cookies in Firefox, certain security settings or updates might reset these permissions, causing the need to re-register.

3. **Private Browsing**: If you're using Firefox in Private Browsing mode, it won't save cookies and site data, resulting in the need to re-register each time.

4. **Extensions or Add-ons**: Some extensions, like privacy or ad-blocking tools, might interfere with the retention of cookies and settings, requiring re-registration.

      1. Steps to Mitigate the Issue:

1. **Check Browser Settings**: Ensure that cookies are allowed, and settings are correctly configured to retain site data. 2. **Clear Cache and Cookies**: Sometimes clearing cache and old cookies can help resolve the issue. 3. **Disable Extensions**: Temporarily disable extensions that might interfere with cookie retention. 4. **Contact Bank Support**: Reach out to your bank's support team for specific advice tailored to their security protocols.

Hi Paul, I agree that would be annoying. There are some sites where you need to tell it to set a persistent cookie, otherwise it only sets a session cookie. Because cookie data can be a bit obscured, it can be difficult to recognize which one is the critical one for this purpose, but while you are on the problem site, you can press Shift+F9 to open the Storage Inspector and see whether the cookies are set to expire at a future date (you might need to add the Expires column by right-clicking an existing column heading and using a drop-down list to add it). This also is an area where you can see whether cookies are set on domains other than the most obvious one(s).
