how do I allow permanent cookies for a website

more options

A games site that I like requires an activation code to get in, but after a certain number of uses of the activation code, the code becomes invalid and I can't get in. The site uses permanent cookies to get past the activation code requirement (a bookmark won't do it). How do I allow permanent cookies for this one particular site? I don't want to disable tracking on any other site, just this one. Thanks! Kathy

Hi Kathy, what are your current settings related to cookies? There are several different sections that could be affecting sites:

(1) Enhanced Tracking Protection => Custom

I haven't tested whether these are compatible with exceptions:

  • From visited
  • All third-party cookies
  • All cookies

(2) Cookies and Site Data

This is okay if you create exceptions:

[x] Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed

(3) History

Avoid these settings if you want to keep cookies for future sessions:

  • Firefox will never remember history (causes automatic private browsing)
  • Firefox will use custom settings for history + "Always use private browsing mode"
  • Firefox will use custom settings for history + "Clear history when Firefox closes" + Settings button has Cookies selected (does NOT honor exceptions)

The easiest way to make an exception for a site is to use the Page Info dialog. While you are on the relevant page, you can call that up using either:

  • Ctrl+i
  • right-click a blank area of the page > View Page Info
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info

When the dialog comes up, click the Permission icon at the top to show that panel.

Cookies - Scroll down to "Set Cookies" and uncheck the "Use default" box, and then select Allow to let the site set persistent cookies.

Does that work? (Note that if the site already set a session cookie, this may not automatically extend its life, the site needs to try setting a persistent cookie again.)

After permissions are set, the site should appear on the Options/Preferences page, in the Cookies and Site Data section, when you click "Manage Permissions".
