Thunderbird update 60.7 does not work with Lightning. Any alternatives?

Under Win7CHS, IMAP, after the update to 60.7 Thunderbird does not work with Lightning anymore. Thunderbird can only be used by disabling Lightning. I faced this before when Lightning was not updated during a Thunderbird update process, but this time re-installing Lightning with the latest build form the extension website does not help.

This leaves me without calendar. Unfortunately the stand-alone calendar Sunbird was discontinued years ago, and it looks like Lightning does not work with FireFox.

So, any alternatives, workarounds, or maybe a hotfix? Thanks in advance, anything highly appreciated.

Thunderbird 60.7.0 works with Lightning version 6.2.7

Do you use any other addons?

Suggest you uninstall Thunderbird and get a fresh download which installs both. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

On the Lightning add-on page only v6.2.5 is available. Where do I get v6.2.7?

I am using Nostalgy.

Thank you for this suggestion. Will a fresh install and then using the present profile be an option? I have several hundred thousands of emails, if I set up everything from scratch, from experience speaking it will take days to get everything back to normal, that is the email part.

I've not heard of 'Nostalgy' addon causing a conlict with Lightning. But before reinstalling Thunderbird, Iwould suggest you disable 'Nostagy' addon, restart Thunderbird and retest to see if Lightning suddenly works ok.

If still not working download fresh version and reinstall.

Your profile folders are not stored in the same place as the actual program. So should not be effected. If using Windows then the profile will be here: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\ Making a copy of the 'Thunderbird' folder and store on external hardrive or usb of suitable size will backup everything.

Sorry for the delayed reply, was OOO for some days.

I did all the relevant tests before asking for help, having encountered Thunderbird/Lightning quirks before. Thunderbird does not run with Lightning, well it starts but then slows down to a standstill. Thunderbird does run perfectly with Nostalgy enabled, but does not run with Lightning, no matter Nostalgy had been enabled or disabled.

I did an install on a Windows 10 machine, Simplified Chinese (CHS) OS, TB had not been installed there before. I copied the profile, same effect as on my main machine (Win7, CHS). Runs perfectly without Lightning, slows down to snail speed with Lightning. So it looks like there is something in the profile that does not agree with the latest update to 60.7.

You mentioned Lightning 6.2.7 but there is only 6.2.5 available on the Thunderbird Add-Ons page. Please point my to the download of 6.2.7, thanks!

The current version of Thunderbird is always bundled with the installer. There is no reason to have a separate download.

DO you have an anti virus program installed that might be causing contention issues? What operating system? How many remote calendars do you have? are they marked for offline use? try not if they are.

I was referring to your information. In my experience with previous Thunderbird/Lightning quirks, the newest Lightning version used to solve the problem. And in the past, sometimes the newest Lightning version had not been installed with Thunderbird. So, that's why I had been asking.

But - it looks like there is a workaround for the problem.

We used a very old profile (prefs.js) from 2011, when we still used Sunbird. Thus the general settings were there but no activated calendar. After adding our company calendar (CalDAV) that has been in use for many years, the problem started, again. We could see that every single old entry was being slowly read in, day by day, month by month, year by year.

During the reading-in of these entries, Thunderbird used 25% of the CPU, any click resulted in a Not Responding message, any action became visible for several seconds up to half a minute (Login, Downloading message). The machine in question has an Intel i5 CPU, 8 G Ram, Win7 64-bit.

This seems to be happening after each restart of Thunderbird.

The default setting for the calendar events to be shown seems to be "All Events". As the slow down starts only after about 5 seconds, we managed to set the filter to "All Future Events" after the next Thunderbird restart.

Voila, no slow down anymore, Thunderbird responsive.

I want to point you to this Bugzilla report. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=733039 It describes exactly what has been happening, culminating in the complete standstill after the last Thunderbird update. It looks like this has been around for a long time.

The problem itself is not solved at all, but Lightning can be used with this "All Future Events" setting.
