is there a way to change browser tab width settings in Firefox 57 & up? tried to install custom tab w/ extension but incompatible with current version Quantum
Upgraded to Firefox 60 Quantum back in May of this year, and want to know if there is a way to change (toggle between increasing and decreasing browser tab width as desired) in this particular version. We already tried to install the Custom Tab Width extension in order to try making these changes, but got a message saying that the extension was incompatible with Firefox Quantum. Is that true with all of the Quantum packages. A relative of mine who is an avid computer user said I will probably have to wait until the next version of Firefox is released and then attempt the installation of the Custom Tab Width extension to see if it is compatible with that version. I don't understand why the default width settings cannot be changed with a simple process in the Settings or Preferences directories. I usually have my browser set up so that I can have more than 7 tabs or work spaces open and visible on the first screen, but since the default width is set to 100 pixels, I can only have 7 work spaces open and visible at one time. I have been using the Firefox web browser for the last 6 years, and have been pretty satisfied with it. The Firefox version I was using prior to the recent upgrade to 60 Quantum was already set to a much lower pixel number for the work spaces. Would also like to know if there is a way to hide search text in a browser tab when switching between work spaces.

There is an option in the Firefox configuration for this. Do the following:
- Type
about:config
in your Firefox address bar - Bypass the security warning
- Find the
browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
preference - Double check the preference and adjust the value
Hope this helps.
NOTE: You may need to restart Firefox for the changes to apply successfully.

Note not all code in one place.
Shrink the tab width down to about the size of the icon:
.tabbrowser-tab {
min-width: 40px !important;
}
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
As a footnote to the above replies:
- The tab width normally shrinks from 225 pixels to 76 pixels as you open more tabs, and then scroll buttons appear.
- You can set the
browser.tabs.tabMinWidth
preference as low as 50 -- any lower is treated as 50.
- If you need to go below 50 pixels, then you can use a custom style rule in a userChrome.css file.
