Why do Replys to incoming messages have random characters apend to each line

I am having problems with upside down ? marks & slash marks preceding my reply's to various emails. Has anyone else been through this or knows what the glitch is

The problem is the person sending the mail. Use the Options menu in the compose window to set the character encoding to Unicode. That should fix it.

Unicode is my general setting, Any other idea's
